Yes it's an old post from 9/2007, and yes the iPod Touch is way better. See the update above dated 12/2/09.

Thanks for the testimonial on the Outlook syncing.

Where have you been? Must be an ancient post. Apple is ONE company that isn't complacent in their product development. Have you not heard of the 32GB or 64GB iPod? I too have a 64 GB iPod and it's an absolute music monster as well as able to run almost all apps compatible with iPhone and many iPad apps as well. It's almost impossible to fill it up with apps, music or photos....unless of course you spend ALL your money on music and apps. For me the calendar works great because I sync it with Outlook. I can sink email, contacts, tasks and calendar and it reminds me of appointments just like Outlook does....only it's in my pocket not on my laptop.

Larry, thanks for checking in on this old article.

The iPod did get a heck of a lot better as a media player and PDA in the 2+ years since this article was published

It went from 8GB to the 64GB monster.
You can now search within the iPod app instead of flicking through an interminable list.
It has mail and maps, which were originally suppressed.
It went from no app store to app store (the biggest enabler of all).
Apple made it easier to get to playback controls (double click on the Home button)
It syncs your data better with various services.

Unfortunately, the calendar still sucks by 1997 standards:

There's an old (really old) saying... No one knows how ignorant you are, until you open your mouth !
My 64gb iTouch 3rd gen is a marvelous media player and a fairly decent PDA too! There is free software (winFF) to convert (almost?) any video file. The only problem is a winVista PIM that handles the Notes, Calendar & Contacts other than outlook. email is easy: don't delete from server your pop3 account mail, just read it on the ipod and delete it from your pc later. Skype is free and if you buy an unlimited account (cheap) you can forward calls as and when needed. Google earth=maps. OS 3.1.2 = fully functional calendar.

Could it be true?
